In a joint project in 2003 between the dolphinarium in Duisburg, DE, Amrotec and AquaCare, the nitrate concentration of the seawater dolphin basin was to be reduced significantly below 50 mg/l. An additional condition was that the water released from nitrate must also contain no bacteria, whether pathogenic or harmless.

A duplex steel rotobioreactor (RBR) with a capacity of 1 m3/h was installed on the seawater circuit of the dolphinarium. The water removed from the nitrate with this denitrification system was then roughly freed of bacteria in a sediment chamber and then disinfected in a modified skimmer at approx. 700 mV. A continuous measurement of the parameters nitrite/nitrate, ammonium and redox potential rounded off the system. The complete installation was controlled by a PLC and the measured values were recorded.

Except for the unavoidable disturbances in test operation, continuous operation ran smoothly; the target values could be reached; the water was bacterially perfect and thus the project was a complete success.
