A refugium is used to settle a rich microfauna. In the sea water aquarium, the smallest creatures of fish and other animals are quickly decimated. In the sanctuary, however, these organisms can retreat and reproduce. Some of the animals drift through the drain into the aquarium, where they serve as high-quality plankton that serves both corals and fish as an attractive "goody ".

When macroalgae settle, their cleaning power is used to improve water values and important organic substances are released. If the refuge is illuminated antycyclically, i.e. at night, the daily pH fluctuations (delta pH) are reduced.

It is important that the overflow of the refugium is routed directly into the aquarium or to the suction point of the return pump and not into the filter system.
