The zeolite filter has two modes of action:

It binds ammonium/ammonia and organic substances on the surface of the filter material (zeolite). These are absorbed by bacteria, creating a bacterial lawn. To prevent the filter from becoming overgrown over time, the filter bed must be rinsed regularly. To do this, the filter bed is agitated daily with the supply of air so that excess bacteria and sludge are flushed away.
In aquariums with nutrient deficiencies, the excess bacteria should be introduced into the aquarium as bacterioplankton.
For eutrophic (polluted) aquariums, the zeolite filter drain should terminate before the skimmer so that it skims the bacteria, thereby removing nutrients from the system. Discharge into a fleece filter is also possible.
The natural mineral zeolite acts as an ion exchanger to bind heavy metals such as lead, zinc and others.

It is important to replace 2/3 of the filter material approximately every two months.

Installation of the zeolite filter:

Required accessories:

water inlet with sufficient pressure (bypass from aquarium main pump or own pump)
time-controlled air supply for the rinsing process

The inlet water from the aquarium is pumped into the filter by means of the bypass of the main pump or an additional feed pump. The water flows through the filter from the bottom to the top. The pollutants can bind to the zeolite material and bacteria settle on the surface.

To prevent the filter from becoming clogged and reducing performance, the system should be flushed with air every day. An air pump connected to a timer pumps air into the filter for a few minutes, creating strong turbulence. This mechanical movement loosens excess bacteria, which is removed by the filter's drain.

For high nutrient aquariums: direct the drain from the filter to the suction side of the skimmer.

For low nutrient aquariums: direct the filter drain directly to the suction side of the recirculation pump. Supplemental feeding of coral and/or bacterial products may be useful.
