Microfiltration is a particle filter for extremely small particles down to the double-digit nanometer range. It is used as a special filter in offspring and algae culture and is operated similarly to reverse osmosis, but without the high pressure. The transition to ultrafiltration is not precisely defined.
Microfiltration retains protozoa, algae, bacteria and large viruses. It can be used to produce sterile rearing water for microalgae and animal larvae from aquarium water.
