24 Refugium

The refugium is an additional aquarium separate from the aquarium system (subdivision in the filter tank is also possible), in which a rich micro- and macrofauna can develop without predators (e.g. fish). The refugium belongs to the passively working filter systems.

The reproductive products of the fauna (snails, crabs, tunicates and much more) are carried into the aquarium with the effluent water of the refugium and serve there as rich plankton for fish, corals and filter feeders.

If the refugium is illuminated at night (anti-cyclical), the pH value of the aquarium water does not fluctuate as much. Nightly oxygen deficits in aquarium systems without skimmer are also reduced. A refugium can also be equipped with a Deep Sand or JAUBERT system. Mangrove "filters" are also possible and can also be counted as refugia.
