Reactor with screens for filter material (quartz sand). The water flows from the bottom to the top (upstream) through the filter. On the sand grains bacteria are growing, that oxidize harmful substances, for example nitrification. The water flow is adjusted with the inlet ball valve.

Required accessories:

water inlet with enough pressure (bypass from aquarium main pump or extra pump)

With a bypass from the aquarium main pump or with an extra pump the feed water arrives to the system. The water flow is adjusted in that way, that the complete filter material is in motion. After a while bacteria settle down on the filter sand and clean the water. Too thick biofilms are sheared-off continuously - the bacteria reaches the aquarium as bacterial plankton.

The out-coming and cleaned water flows back to the aquarium.
