Ion exchange resin to remove nitrate from fresh water and slightly brackish water - the resin can be regenerated after loading with a saline solution. The resin is ready for use and can be used immediately in a filter.

The aquarium water flows through a filter containing the nitrate resin. The nitrate in the water is exchanged in the ion exchanger for chloride ions. When the capacity is exhausted - the nitrate concentration in the aquarium water slowly increases again - the resin can be regenerated.

A saline solution is prepared for this purpose. Dissolve approx. 300 g/l iodine-free common salt (NaCl) per liter of tap water (approx. 30°C); tablet salt from softening systems can also be used. Approx. 5 liters of brine are required per liter of nitrate resin. (If you have a softening unit, you can use the brine from this unit directly).
Remove the nitrate filter with the resin from the aquarium system. Allow the brine to run slowly through the filter in the opposite direction to how it runs in normal operation. Then rinse the resin slowly with approx. 10 liters of tap water per liter of resin to prevent common salt from entering the aquarium. If you have a conductivity meter, you can also rinse until the outgoing water has the same conductivity as the incoming water.

Install the filter back in your aquarium and put it into operation.

Dosage: approx. 1 litre per 200 litres of aquarium water (larger quantities extend the running time until the next regeneration; smaller quantities reduce it)
Capacity: approx. 30 g of nitrate per litre of resin (strongly dependent on the water used: the more salty the lower the capacity)

Autotrophic nitrate reactor (sulfur nitrate reactor) consisting of a transparent housing fixed on a stable base plate; sulfur granules divided by removable screens; circulation pump with double ceramic bearings for creating a strong circulation current that raises the efficiency and reduces the risk of blockage. An automatic flushing system ensures low maintenance times.

Advantages over other reactors:

The built-in circulation pump generates a strong circulation current (upstream), that lowers the danger of blocking and channelling. A higher reaction rate is the consequence. An automatic flushing device ensures regular loosening of the filter bed and reduces maintenance times.

The in-coming water is de-oxygenated by the biological activity of the filter bacteria. If any or low oxygen is in the water the bacteria switch over to nitrate respiration and consume nitrate instead of oxygen; these bacteria obtain the required energy from the sulphur granulate. This de-nitrification process lowers the nitrate concentration of the water.

The out-coming water flows back to the aquarium with less nitrate. The outlet water must not be directed into filters with phosphate adsorbers.

As the sulphur granulate is used up over time, the material has to be refilled every few months. If the capacity of the filter is too high, part of the filter material can be removed from the filter (please store the removed material in a dry place).
